Signing of the recognition agreement was a major step forward

It is a red letter day for Barnardo's and UNISON as Roger Singleton CEO of Barnardo's and Dave Prentis, General Secretary of UNISON sign the largest ever Recognition Agreement in the Voluntary Sector. TEST

What did Elaine Bennett, Equalities Officer and Sharon Homer-Wheeler, Branch Treasurer think of it all?

Elaine: "I finally feel able to be out of the closet as a UNISON member."

Sharon: "It means you can say you are a member without any stigma attached. Its once in a lifetime and it was great to witness such an historic occasion."

Elaine: "It makes me realise that I have a right to be there with the powers that be, and that my voice is being heard. I really enjoyed meeting Dave Prentis, he seemed very approachable, and was interested in what I had to say."

Sharon: "I agree, he appreciated what we are doing, the struggle we have had for recognition, and the challenge and contrast of being a receptionist at a regional office and the treasurer of a national branch."

Elaine : "I had never met Roger Singleton before, but it was good to meet on an equal footing and I enjoyed talking to him about Equality Issues. Barnardos is sending out the signal that it is okay to be part of the union and its important that people from all parts of the organisation join and do their bit however small."

Sharon: "Everyone is accepted in the branch on their own merits, not who or what they are within Barnardos. The Branch Executive are such a positive outgoing and welcoming group of people from all over the organisation."

Elaine & Sharon: "Remember, this could be you, get involved , get active and be prepared for life changing experiences! "
