Whilst decisions on the nature and extent of services must always be a matter for management, Barnardo's recognises that through meaningful and effective consultation it may be possible to find an alternative solution without resorting to compulsory redundancies.
The purpose of consultation is to provide as early an opportunity as practicable for all concerned to share the problem, explore options and seek:
alternative ways of tackling the problem
ways of avoiding dismissals
ways of reducing or mitigating the consequences of the redundancies
Consultation with individuals and employee representatives may explore the following:
reducing overtime working
restricting recruitment
retraining and redeployment
natural wastage
introduction of short time working or temporary lay off
seeking applicants for early retirement or voluntary redundancy
retirement of those employees already beyond normal retirement
Consultation will also provide an opportunity to discuss the proposed application of selection criteria.
If redundancy is confirmed, staff affected will be issued with a redundancy letter setting out the notice period and their redundancy pay entitlement, together with a copy of the Redundancy Resource Pack available from HRMs.
