FAQs

What is a probationary period?

The purpose of the probationary period is twofold:

 To ensure that new staff members have the opportunity to become familiar with the practices and procedures of the organisation.

 To allow staff members to demonstrate their ability to effectively and efficiently perform their duties.

Additional details

Barnardo's requires all externally appointed staff (permanent and fixed term) to successfully complete a probationary period of up to six months. This is generally sufficient time for a line manager to make a realistic assessment of a staff member's performance. In certain situations the probationary period can be extended (or suspended) but the total probationary period should not exceed nine months.
