The purpose of the probationary period is twofold:
To ensure that new staff members have the opportunity to become familiar with the practices and procedures of the organisation.
To allow staff members to demonstrate their ability to effectively and efficiently perform their duties.
Barnardo's requires all externally appointed staff (permanent and fixed term) to successfully complete a probationary period of up to six months. This is generally sufficient time for a line manager to make a realistic assessment of a staff member's performance. In certain situations the probationary period can be extended (or suspended) but the total probationary period should not exceed nine months.
